Amazon hedges Kindle bet--- buys Stanza for iPhone

Now Amazon owns both of the top rated ebook readers for the iPhone...and puts another nail in the foot of the great Google Book Copying Monster. It may come down to Amazon and Google as the only "mainstream" publishers. Look for either one of them or both to start acquiring the traditional publishing houses...which are all in financial meltdown because they've allowed the business model to get away from them. I wouldn't be surprised to see Amazon and or Google, and maybe Yahoo, start buying some of the newspaper brands that have been going out of business.

Traditional publishing still will survive if they keep up with the times like Baen. The Kindle is a nice gadget, but it ain't there yet for replacing books. It's a nice toy, and Teh Shiny is selling it, but there's a few features it needs to really replace the paper book. Most important being longevity and ruggedness. I have thousands of books I bought 10, 20, 30 years ago which are just as readable now as they were when I bought them, and some of them have been through the mill.

I'm not sure any internet company wants to buy a publisher. They all remember AOL Time Warner.

But I do think that we're seeing classic monopolistic behavior by Google, Amazon and co.
