Big Whooping NASA Roman Candle!
The USA re-entered the space age this afternoon (about 1:30 CDT) as Discovery launched with no problems at all after three postponements. Space Shuttle Discovery launches This is the first time that a US spacecraft has been launched on July 4th, the US Independence Day holiday. Preliminary indications were that there have been no foam tears on the main fuel tank that could break a tile and lead to a repeat of the 2003 disaster that took the lives of the entire crew of the space shuttle Columbia. Once the Discovery docks at the International Space Station, spacewalks will be scheduled if required to check for damage prior to Discovery's return to Earth.

This is cool stuff, and the sort of stuff that is needed to inspire our young people into lives of science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
